Your journey comes to an end in Athens. Make the most of these final moments to pick up a few souvenirs. At the end of Ermou Street, the city’s main shopping avenue, the Monastiraki flea market is full of unexpected treasures. If you’re after something more upscale, head to the elegant Kolonaki district, and particularly Voukourestiou Street, known for its chic boutiques. Enjoy a private transfer to the airport. And don’t forget to thank the goddess Athena, guardian of the Greek capital!
After landing in Heraklion, you head west along the coast! The drive offers stunning views, with rolling hills covered in olive trees and beautiful stretches of beach. You head west toward Balos Beach, located about 52 km from Chania at the very tip of the Gramvousa Peninsula. On the penultimate day of your journey, head back toward Heraklion with a stop at Knossos, the ancient center of King Minos’s power and the largest Bronze Age archaeological site in Crete, and likely all of Greece.
At Knossos, history and mythology intertwine. The Greek myths are filled with stories of the Minoan civilization that once dominated the Aegean. It’s here that Daedalus is said to have built the famous labyrinth where King Minos imprisoned victims for the Minotaur’s hunger. The Athenian hero Theseus ultimately defeated the monster, aided by Minos’s own daughter, Ariadne.
Finally, arrive in Heraklion for an evening in Crete’s vibrant capital. This cradle of European civilization is a modern city that still preserves remarkable traces of its glorious past. Explore the stunning Venetian harbor, the impressive 10th-century Church of Aghios Titos, the historic Armeria, and the city hall.
